ABOUT US

30 Years on the Floor. A Lifetime of Social Dancing.

Gideon’s first dance lesson was at age 11. He didn’t dance again for over a decade. Then in 1996 he walked into a studio in Newcastle. The owner pulled him aside: “You should be teaching, not taking lessons.”

By late 1997 he was an instructor at DanceWell in Sunnyside, Pretoria. Within one month he had his first students. Over the next three decades he taught more than 1,000 people. Ages 9 to 76. Including blind and deaf students. All in the Arthur Murray and Fred Astaire tradition of social dancing.

Arthur Murray and Fred Astaire built social dancing in South Africa. Their studios are closed. The tradition is not. House of Dance LABDS carries it forward. Gideon now trains the next generation of instructors to bring social dancing back to every community in Gauteng.

PRIVATE COUPLE DANCE CLASSES

Where will the dance classes be held?

All lessons are held at Eco Boulevard Shopping Centre (next to Virgin Active), 270 Witch-Hazel Ave, Eco Park, Centurion, Pretoria. Lessons are by appointment only. No walk-ins.

What are the costs for dance classes?

Lesson costs depend on the programme and level of commitment you choose. In the free 30-minute consultation, Gideon will explain all available options, how they work and the investment for each. That way you can decide if it is the right fit. Pricing is discussed privately, not listed online, because the right package depends entirely on your goals and schedule.

Are there group lessons available?

All standard lessons are private. One couple per session. This ensures a focused environment and steady progress at your own pace. Group lessons are not offered as open classes. They may be arranged by students who form their own group, subject to availability and specific conditions.

Can we change our weekly time slot?

All lessons are scheduled as a standing weekly appointment to ensure consistency and progress. If a change is needed, it can be discussed in advance and will depend on availability. While flexibility is limited, we will always try to accommodate reasonable requests.

Do we need dance experience to start?

No. Most couples start as complete beginners. We take you step by step at a pace that feels relaxed and achievable. The only requirement is that you come as a couple. You need a practice partner to make meaningful progress between lessons.

Dance Instructor Training

What does the selection interview involve?

The interview is a free 30-minute conversation in Centurion (or online if applicable). You will discuss your goals, dance background, availability, and readiness to commit. This is not a sales pitch. It is a selection process for a limited intake of 8 students per group. No obligation and no pressure.

Do I need previous dance experience to apply?

You do not need to be a professional dancer, but you do need basic rhythm and the ability to hear and count the beat. During the interview, Gideon will confirm whether the instructor pathway is the right fit for you. If you are unsure, apply anyway. The interview is designed to answer exactly that question.

Is pricing discussed during the interview?

Yes. Pricing and payment options are discussed privately during the selection interview only. There is no pricing listed publicly because we first need to confirm you are a suitable candidate for the programme. The Bronze programme is designed to pay for itself. Gideon will show you exactly how during the conversation.

What dances will I learn in the instructor training?

The Bronze programme covers the full social dance syllabus across four categories: Latin dances (Mambo, Salsa, Samba, Rumba, Cha-Cha), Rock & Roll (Swing, Boogie), Ballroom (Slow Foxtrot, Tango, Slow Waltz, Viennese Waltz), and South African social dances (Sokkie/Two-Step, Line Dancing). You will learn to teach each dance. Not just perform it.

Social Dancing — General

What is social dancing and how is it different from competitive ballroom?

Social dancing is designed for one purpose: dancing confidently with a partner on a real floor at a wedding, a social evening, a work function or one of Pretoria’s popular dance venues. Competitive ballroom is designed for judged performance. The dances overlap, but the technique, timing, and purpose are completely different. At House of Dance LABDS, we teach social dancing exclusively. Every skill you learn works on a real floor, not just on a competition stage.

How much do wedding dance lessons cost in South Africa?

Wedding dance lesson costs depend on the number of sessions, the dances chosen, and how far in advance you book before the wedding. House of Dance LABDS discusses wedding dance pricing privately in the free 30-minute consultation. Most couples need between 6 and 12 sessions for a confident, natural first dance. The earlier you book, the more relaxed the process.
